CINCINNATI (WKRC) - U. S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) on Wednesday warned Thursday he would not use Viagra for the cure for men's impotence.
Nathalie L. Harris, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said the drug is not needed and that the use of the drug is only in part a medical procedure.
"This is not about sex. This is about the drug," she said.
A U. official in the House charged that Harris had used the drug for sexual purposes in the past.
Harris said the drug may have been used to treat a condition in the past, but now it is a "serious and potentially dangerous drug."
It could be used to treat some types of cancer. The drug is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction. The use of Viagra, the brand name for Viagra, in the United States is illegal, but it has gained some notoriety.
Harris said the drug should be prescribed only to men who meet specific criteria. "I would be hesitant to use this drug," she said. "We need to find a cure for the disorder."

Viagra is marketed under the brand name Revatio, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Viagra has also been used to treat pulmonary hypertension in men.
Harris said the use of Viagra is not new. The FDA has previously warned against using Viagra to treat impotence and to treat erectile dysfunction.
She said it may not be a problem to be worried about, but the problem may be a symptom rather than a condition, and she does not want to make any promises or recommendations about how Viagra can be used.
The drug is available under a number of brand names, including Revatio, Cialis and Levitra.
Harris said she has not seen any cases of men using Viagra, other than those that are allergic to the active ingredient, sildenafil, and the drug's other active ingredients.
"We know that some men have allergic reactions to Viagra," she said. "But we do not know the exact amount of sildenafil in Viagra, and we do not know what happens to it after it is taken."
Harris said that the FDA is taking the latest information into consideration for men who are using Viagra.
"It is not a new drug," she said. "It's been used by men in some cases and is no longer available."
She said she was concerned about Viagra being used by men for other purposes.
The FDA has not said how much Viagra should be used in men.
Harris said she had received some reports of men using Viagra for purposes not listed in the warning about the use of Viagra.
She said that the drug has been used to treat erectile dysfunction for many years and has been used for several years to treat impotence.
Harris said the drug should be used only when a man is aroused. She said that a man should not use Viagra for an extended period of time, even a few hours.
The drug should not be used in men who have certain other conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, low blood sugar, depression, or certain heart or blood vessel problems.
